How the oil is made

Botanical Essentials

Hair oil built for the oldest ritual there is

What this is

One herbal hair oil, made in Sydney. It goes on the scalp rather than the ends, and it stays there — the whole blend is designed around the wait.

What is in it

Thirteen plant oils in a jojoba and olive-squalane base. Rosemary, peppermint and black seed at the scalp; argan, avocado and castor along the length. Nothing synthetic, no added fragrance.

What it does

Softens a tight scalp, gives the roots something to hold, and leaves hair heavier and calmer than it went in. Once a week is the rhythm most people settle into.

How you use it

On the scalp, then left alone

Most oils on a shelf are finishing oils. You smooth a drop through dry ends, and it sits on the outside of the hair looking like shine. That is a different job to this one.

Aliora is built for the older practice: a few drops straight onto the parting, fingertips flat, small circles, section by section. Then you braid it back and get on with your day. The oil does the rest on its own.

Three to five dropsStraight onto the parting, then worked in with flat fingertips.

While it sits

What happens to your hair

  1. 00:00

    It warms in the palms

Three to five drops, rubbed between the hands until the chill leaves them. Warm oil thins and travels; cold oil sits on the surface and never gets past the hair.

  2. 00:05

    It reaches the skin

Parted in sections and worked in with flat fingertips, the oil stops being on your hair and starts being on your scalp. The peppermint arrives about now — a clear cool across the skin. That is how you know it landed.

  3. 00:30

    The floor

Half an hour in, the oil has stopped sitting on top and softened into the outer layer of skin and the cuticle. This is the minimum. Anything less and you have oiled your hair, not your scalp.

  4. 04:00

    The slow part

Hours in, the heavier oils — castor, avocado, argan — are doing their work along the length, while rosemary and black seed stay at the root. Nothing has gone tacky or turned. The blend was built to wait this long.

  5. ALL DAY

    It comes out

By the end of the day the work is done. Shampoo twice if you were generous. Hair comes out heavier and softer than it went in, and the scalp feels calm rather than stripped.

The bottle

One formula, one bottle

Thirteen botanicals in a jojoba and olive-squalane base, pressed to a weight that sinks in rather than sits on top. Rosemary and peppermint for the scalp; argan, avocado and black seed for the length. Most scalps want a run of eight to ten weekly applications before the difference shows in the mirror rather than under the fingers.

Full details

Set aside an afternoon. That is the whole method.
